In 1817
Congo Square in New Orleans Louisiana became the first and only place in North America where enslaved Africans gained the First Amendment Right of Peaceful Assembly, able to legally gather in a public space outside of slave quarters on plantations. On Sundays only, from sun up to sun down, Congo Square was an open market place where they could buy and sell goods. These Sunday gatherings quickly grew to include singing and dancing as it transformed into a sacred space where they were FREE to celebrate and practice their homeland rituals, cultural, and religious traditions. Historians credit those Sunday gatherings as having birthed African American / Black Culture and Congo Square being the place where those enslaved Africans birthed American Music.
